Environmental pesticide exposure and Alzheimer's disease in southern Spain: A cross-sectional study

The intensive cultivation under plastic in southern Spain has made the agricultural model highly productive. Although strict regulations on pesticide usage exist, exposure to pesticides in the environment has been associated with an increased appearance of neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer's disease (AD). A cross-sectional study was performed to examine the prevalence and risk of AD related to pesticide exposure in Andalusia (Spain). We utilized the Odds Ratio statistical test to compare the prevalence rate of AD in the exposed and unexposed areas. 40,044 cases were collected from computerized hospital records between 2000 and 2021. Districts with higher pesticide use showed significantly higher prevalence rates and increased risk of developing AD, compared to those with lower pesticide use. These findings provide further evidence supporting an increased risk of AD following environmental exposure to pesticides at the level of the general population.

Exploring the correlation between environmental pesticide exposure and antioxidant level in recently diagnosed cancer patients

Aim: Within biological systems thiol and ascorbic acid are important antioxidant that play roles in the antioxidant defense systems. In this study, we investigated the correlation between environmental pesticide exposure and antioxidant level in recently diagnosed cancer patients. Methodology: Blood samples were collected from 87 participants (48 male and 39 female) including control, gallbladder, blood, and oral cancer patients. Serum total thiol content and antioxidant ascorbic acid levels were measured by biochemical method. We also examined whether there is any correlation between the plasma thiol content and ascorbic acid content in cancer prevention. Results: Analysis indicated that most of the cancer patients belonged to middle age and were mostly non-vegetarian. In the present study, it was found that the total thiol content of cancer pateints was high, while the ascorbic acid content was low in cancer patients as compared to control indicating the role of oxidative stress in cancer development. Interpretation: The present study suggests that pesticide exposure may increase the total thiol content and negatively impact ascorbic acid content in cancer patients. Exposure to Environmental Pesticides and the Risk of Autism Spectrum Disorders: A Population-Based Case-Control Study.

Background and Objectives: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by challenges in communication, social interactions, and repetitive behaviors. Although the factors that influence the development of this condition are unknown, certain chemical compounds such as pesticides have been proposed as possible contributors. Due to the lack of an established causal link between pesticide exposure and ASD, this study aimed to evaluate this potential association. Materials and Methods: A case-control study was carried out to ascertain the prevalence and risk associated with ASD in relation to pesticide exposure over a 21-year study period (2000-2021). Results: We included 2821 individuals diagnosed with ASD residing in areas of both high and low pesticide exposure in southern Spain. There was a rise in the ASD prevalence rate in regions with elevated pesticide use when compared to regions with low use [odds ratio (OR): 1.34, 95% confidence interval (CI), (1.24-1.44)]. Notably, men had the highest likelihood, with an OR: 1.42, 95% CI, (1.30-1.55). Furthermore, after performing multiple binary logistic regression adjusted for age, sex, and geographical area, males exhibited a higher likelihood compared to females [OR: 2.41, 95% CI, (2.21-2.62)]. Conclusions: Overall, this research suggests a connection between heightened environmental pesticide exposure due to increased agricultural use and autism.

Risk mitigation measures for pesticide runoff: How effective are they?

One of the most important sources of pesticide pollution of surface waters is runoff and erosion from agricultural fields after rainfall. This study analyses the efficacy of different risk mitigation measures to reduce pesticide runoff and erosion inputs into surface waters from arable land excluding rice fields. Three groups of risk mitigation measures were quantitatively analyzed: vegetative filter strips, micro-dams in row crops and soil conservation measures. Their effectiveness was evaluated based on a meta-analysis of available experimental data using statistical methods such as classification and regression trees, and exploratory data analysis. Results confirmed the effectiveness of vegetative filter strips and micro-dams. Contrary to common assumption, the width of vegetative filter strips alone is not sufficient to predict their effectiveness. The effectiveness of soil conservation measures (especially mulch-tillage) varied widely. This was in part due to the heterogeneity of the available experimental data, probably resulting from the inconsistent implementation and the inadequate definitions of these measures. Both vegetative filter strips and micro-dams are effective and suitable, and can therefore be recommended for quantitative assessment of environmental pesticide exposure in surface waters. However, the processes of infiltration and sedimentation in vegetative filter strips should be simulated with a mechanistic model like Vegetative Filter Strip Modeling System, VFSMOD. The reduction effect of micro-dams can be modelled by reducing the runoff curve number, e.g., in the pesticide root zone model, PRZM. Soil conservation measures are in principle promising, but further well-documented data are needed to determine under which conditions they are effective. © 2023 The Authors. Environmental pesticide exposure and the risk of irritable bowel syndrome: A case-control study

The agricultural model in southern Spain is highly productive, mainly due to the intensive cultivation under plastic. Despite strict pesticide regulation, human exposure to pesticides in the environment has been connected to an increase in diseases such as celiac disease. Certain pesticides have also been associated to the disruption of the intestinal microbiota, which has been tied to the development of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). A case-control study was conducted in Andalusia, south Spain, to assess the prevalence and risk of IBS related to pesticide exposure. This research found a high prevalence of IBS in Andalusia between 2000 and 2021 in areas with high pesticide exposure using agronomic criteria. Furthermore, the odds ratio for IBS was significantly higher in the population with high pesticide exposure. This study suggests that pesticides may be involved in IBS, whereas more research is needed to determine the role of pesticides in IBS symptomatology.

Occupational and environmental pesticide exposure and associated health risks among pesticide applicators and non-applicator residents in rural Ethiopia.

Intensive pesticide use increased concern about the potential acute and chronic health effects of pesticides in general and among applicators in particular. This study aims to explore occupational and environmental pesticide exposure and health risks among pesticide applicators and residents. A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted involving 1,073 individuals. We examined the health effects potentially attributable to pesticide exposure using regression to estimate prevalence ratios (PR). A higher proportion of good knowledge of pesticides [75 vs. 14%; APR = 1.542 (1.358-1.752), p < 0.001] and a higher mean score of perceived health risk of pesticide use [4.21 vs. 3.90; APR = 1.079 (1.004-1.159), p < 0.05] were observed among applicators than residents. A significantly higher proportion of applicators experienced health effects presumably related to pesticide exposure among themselves (36%) than residents (16%), and a higher proportion of them used prescribed drugs in the past 12 months [51 vs. 32%; APR = 1.140 (1.003-1.295), p < 0.05]. Skin irritation, shortness of breath, cough, and dizziness were more likely reported by applicators than residents. Perceived toxicity of currently applied pesticide products, mix pesticides without gloves, regularly maintain and wash sprayer tank after application, occurrence of an incidental splash during mixing and application, and using home-based care after experiencing a symptom presumably due to pesticide exposure were significantly associated with health effects among applicators. Use of face mask and visiting health facility when experiencing a symptom presumably due to pesticide exposure were significantly positively correlated with attending training on the health risks and use of pesticides. A substantial proportion of applicators reported improper use of preventive measures and methods of pesticide waste disposal. These observations point out that applicators can face high health risks of occupational pesticide exposure in Ethiopia. Even trained applicators pursued poor preventive practices; hence, comprehensive practice-oriented in-depth training focusing on safety precautions and proper use of personal protective equipment, and provision of adequate pesticide waste disposal means are crucial interventions.

Uniform stain pattern of robust MOF-mediated probe for flexible paper-based colorimetric sensing toward environmental pesticide exposure

Excessive residual pesticides have raised overall environmental damage and health hazard issues, thus the development of facile and sensitive means for pesticide monitoring in different environmental field is desperately needed but challenging. In this work, a flexible paper-based colorimetry beating coffee-ring effect is achieved toward sensing environmental pesticide exposure in user-friendly mode. First, to circumvent poor performance of biomolecules, robust probe is designed by imprinting metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with specific pockets, enabling to provide “key-lock” identification and sensitive quantitative information under harsh environment. Innovatively, integrating the MOF-mediated probe with filter paper, a well-distributed sensing interface is harvested to reduce colorimetric signal fluctuation for reliable detection properties, which is ascribed to superior wetting behavior of filter paper for avoiding ring-like deposit formation. Additionally, the uniform profile is simulated by Fluent numerical software. Further exploiting smartphone-assisted image acquisition and self-adaptive signal model, the simple-to-perform system exhibits good accuracy toward ppb-level thiacloprid free of colored background interference. A low limit of detection of 0.04 μM thiacloprid (corresponding to 0.01 μg g−1 by weight) is achieved. Moreover, it allows for in-filed monitoring thiacloprid exposure in agricultural wastewater, soil, fresh vegetables with satisfactory recoveries ranging from 92.7 % to 109.0 %, verifying the broad potential applications for point-of-use tracking of environmental pesticide and eventually bringing benefits to ecosystem protection in resource-deficient settings.

Projected Climate and Hydroregime Variability Constrain Ephemeral Wetland-Dependent Amphibian Populations in Simulations of Southern Toads

Amphibian populations are threatened globally by stressors, including diminishing availability of suitable wetland breeding sites, altered hydroregimes driven by changing weather patterns, and exposure to contaminants. Ecological risk assessment should encompass spatial and temporal scales that capture influential ecological processes and demographic responses. Following the PopGUIDE framework of population model development for risk assessment, we used matrix population models, in conjunction with existing hydroregime predictions, under a climate change scenario to evaluate the effects of environmental stochasticity and aquatic pesticide exposure on amphibians that are dependent on ephemeral wetlands. Using southern toads (Anaxyrus terrestris) as an example, we simulated population dynamics with breeding success dependent on hydroregime suitability. Years were defined as optimal, marginal, or insufficient for successful toad recruitment, based on the duration of their potential breeding season and rate of larval development to metamorphosis. We simulated both probabilistic and chronologically specific population projections, including variable annual fecundity, based on hydroregime suitability and reduced larval survival from carbaryl exposure. In our simulations, populations were more negatively impacted by prolonged drought, and consequently multiple sequential years of reproductive failure, than by aquatic pesticide exposure. These results highlight the necessity of reliable climate projections to accurately represent the effects of altered hydroregimes on amphibian populations. Risk assessment approaches could be improved with flexible modifications that allow inclusion of various extrinsic stressors and identification of demographic and ecological vulnerabilities when precise data are lacking.

Environmental pesticide exposure and non-Hodgkin lymphoma survival: a population-based study

BackgroundThere is evidence indicating that pesticide exposure is a risk factor for non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) development. However, the association between pesticide exposure and NHL survival is not well-established.MethodsUsing the California Cancer Registry, we identified patients with a first primary diagnosis of NHL from 2010 to 2016 and linked these patients with CalEnviroScreen 3.0 to obtain production agriculture pesticide exposure to 70 chemicals from the state-mandated Pesticide Use Reporting (PUR) by census tract from 2012 to 2014. In addition, data from PUR was integrated into a geographic information system that employs land-use data to estimate cumulative exposure to specific pesticides previously associated with NHL (glyphosate, organophosphorus, carbamate, phenoxyherbicide, and 2,4-dimethylamine salt) between 10 years prior up to 1 year after NHL diagnosis. Multivariable Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to evaluate the association between total pesticide exposure from CalEnviroScreen 3.0 and individual pesticide exposure from geographic land use data and lymphoma-specific and overall survival.ResultsAmong 35,808 NHL patients identified, 44.2% were exposed to pesticide in their census tract of residence. Glyphosate, organophosphorus, carbamate, phenoxyherbicide, and 2,4-dimethylamine salt exposure was observed in 34.1%, 26.0%, 10.6%, 14.0%, and 12.8% of NHL patients, respectively. Total pesticide exposure at the time of diagnosis was not associated with lymphoma-specific or overall survival. In addition, no association was consistently found between glyphosate, organophosphorus, carbamate, phenoxyherbicide, and 2,4 dimethylamine salt exposure and lymphoma-specific or overall survival.ConclusionsAlthough we found no consistent associations between agricultural pesticide exposure at the neighborhood level and worse survival, these results provide a platform for designing future studies to determine the association between pesticide and NHL.

Environmental pesticide concentrations in air and pregnant women’s urinary pesticide metabolites in the Infants’ Environmental Health Study (ISA)

BACKGROUND AND AIM: We evaluated associations between environmental pesticide concentrations in air and specific urinary pesticide metabolites among pregnant women from the Infants' Environmental Health Study (ISA) in Matina County, Costa Rica. METHODS: We used a Bayesian spatiotemporal model to extrapolate concentrations of the fungicide pyrimethanil and the insecticide chlorpyrifos measured with polyurethane foam passive air samplers (n=48, from 12 schools) across space and time. Using mixed models, we compared them with urinary specific-gravity corrected pesticide metabolite concentrations: 4-hydroxypyrimethanil (OHP, metabolite of pyrimethanil) and 3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridinol (TCPy, metabolite of chlorpyrifos), repeatedly obtained among 451 pregnant women from the ISA Study (n=951). Pyrimethanil in air, OHP, and TCPy were log-transformed prior to statistical analysis to normalize residuals of models. We considered several covariables. RESULTS:Median (p10-p90) concentrations were: pyrimethanil = 1.33 (0.27-17.0) ng/m3, chlorpyrifos = 15.62 (4.38 - 24.19) ng/m3, OHP = 0.39 (0.06- 2.75) ug/L, and TCPy = 1.63 (0.75-4.27) µg/L. A 10% increase in pyrimethanil in air was associated with a 5.7% (95% CI 4.6, 6.8) increase in urinary OHP (μg/L), women who lived near banana plantations had higher OHP, whilst frequent consumption of rice and beans was associated with lower OHP. In addition, each 1 ng/m3 increase in chlorpyrifos in air was associated with a 1.5% increase in TCPy (μg/L), and women who worked in agriculture tended to have higher TCPy. CONCLUSIONS:Despite the limitations of having limited data on pesticide air concentrations in space and time, and biomonitoring of pesticides with short half-lives, the results of this study indicate environmental air concentrations of pyrimethanil and chlorpyrifos explained to some extent internal pesticide metabolite concentrations in pregnant women. Our results suggest that inhalation of these pesticides is one of the pathways of environmental exposure. Passive air sampling of current-use pesticides seems a promising method to monitor environmental pesticide exposure. KEYWORDS: passive air sampling, pesticides, environmental exposure, biomonitoring

Association between occupational and environmental pesticide exposure in Cukurova region by hair and blood biomonitoring.

This study assesses association between occupational and environmental pesticide exposure on pesticide applicators directly exposed to pesticides and inhabitants of the Cukurova region by analyzing blood and hair samples. Hair and blood samples were collected from 132 volunteers, 66 of whom are pesticide applicators, and the rest are non-farmer residents, in 10 villages nearby the Ceyhan River between March and June in 2017. Samples were then analyzed via the liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometer. As the analysis result, a total number of 31 pesticides were detected in hair samples, whereas a total number of 15 pesticides were observed in blood samples. Twenty of the pesticides (64.5%) detected in the hair and 3 (20%) detected in the blood were significantly higher in the applicators than the non-farm residents. Also, 5 pesticides (16.1%) observed in the hair and 7 observed (46.6%) in the blood were banned pesticides. This study investigated the pesticide exposures on people living in the region via hair and blood samples. Our study revealed that, in addition to individuals who are occupationally exposed to pesticides, individuals from all parts of the society, especially those living in the agricultural region, have a certain level of pesticide exposure.

A potential pesticides exposure index (PPEI) for developing countries: Applied in a transboundary basin.

The potential risk of pesticide exposure in developing countries needs further study as data are limited and simple tools to assess the risks on human health and the environment caused by pesticides are lacking. This article introduces a potential pesticides exposure index (PPEI) as a modeling tool to assess the risk of human and environmental pesticide exposure in agricultural basins. The PPEI is based on a number of factors including: human population centers and their proximity to agricultural crops, the toxicological properties of pesticides, and their application frequency. The index was applied to a region in southern Ecuador (approximately 7200 km2 ) where corn, rice, and sugarcane are the predominant crops, and where hot spots with the highest vulnerability to pesticide residues were identified. Of the total of 5326 neighborhoods for the entire study area, 1030 had high, 1124 had medium, and 1009 had low PPEI scores. Among the practical uses of PPEI are to help to assist regulatory agencies and academics evaluate the effects of land use policies on pesticide vulnerability. Also, it can be easily expanded to include other parameters, such as data from other agricultural crops, or frequency of pesticide application. The PPEI can be a valuable indicator of risk of pesticide exposure, as it is reliable and applicable to developing countries, where data and resources are limited. Pesticide exposure and gender discrepancy in breast cancer.

It is biologically plausible that occupational and environmental pesticide exposure may contribute to breast cancer risk. Persistent chemical compounds, such as pesticides, tend to be lipophilic and are detected in human breast milk and adipose tissue. Therefore, the present systematic review aims to clarify the gender difference in breast cancer concerning pesticide exposure. A total of 70 studies satisfied the inclusion criteria and were included in the systematic review. From the studies analyzed, it was observed that exposure to pesticides could be a risk factor for breast cancer in women, in particular in young women and in women who experienced menarche at a young age. In contrast, no association was found for breast cancer in men. Female breast cancer is correlated with estrogen receptor-negative tumor characteristics. Breast cancer in men was no correlated with pesticide exposure. Breast cancer in women has been linked to estrogen receptor positivity, but this positivity appears to be inversely related to fertility. The estrogen-like effects of organochlorine pesticides could be the cause of the observed gender differences.

Pesticides in honey bee colonies: Establishing a baseline for real world exposure over seven years in the USA.

Honey bees Apis mellifera forage in a wide radius around their colony, bringing back contaminated food resources that can function as terrestrial bioindicators of environmental pesticide exposure. Evaluating pesticide exposure risk to pollinators is an ongoing problem. Here we apply five metrics for pesticide exposure risk (prevalence, diversity, concentration, significant pesticide prevalence, and hazard quotient (HQ)) to a nation-wide field study of honey bees, Apis mellifera in the United States. We examined samples from 1055 apiaries over seven years for 218 different pesticide residues and metabolites, determining that bees were exposed to 120 different pesticide products with a mean of 2.78 per sample. Pesticides in pollen were highly prevalent and variable across states. While pesticide diversity increased over time, most detections occurred at levels predicted to be of low risk to colonies. Varroacides contributed most to concentration, followed by fungicides, while insecticides contributed most to diversity above a toxicity threshold. High risk samples contained one of 12 different insecticides or varroacides. Exposures predicted to be low-risk were nevertheless associated with colony morbidity, and low-level fungicide exposures were tied to queen loss, Nosema infection, and brood diseases.

Biomarkers profile and neurobehavioral functioning in pesticide exposed populations in northern Chile.

Background. In Chile, several organophosphates (OP) pesticides banned in other countries are still used for insect control in agriculture. Acute intoxications of agricultural workers frequently occur and they must be notified to the surveillance system of the Ministry of Health. However the impact of chronic and environmental pesticide exposure in the general population has been less studied. Long-term exposure to OP is associated to neurobehavioral impairment and is also considered a risk factor for neurodegenerative pathologies.Methods: We recruited volunteers from rural towns located in northern Chile were agricultural activities are carried on. Volunteers (men and women among 18 and 50 years old, with at least 5 years living in the area or working in agriculture) were classified as environmentally (EE) or occupationally exposed (OE) according to a survey that asked sociodemographic, morbidity and exposure antecedents. Each participant underwent a neuropsychological evaluation using a battery of 21 test that covered areas of memory, attention, executive functions, praxis, psychomotricity and emotion. Inhibition values of blood acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and butyrilcholinesterase (BChE) activities during the spray season were obtained in both exposure groups.Results and Discussion: BChE activity was significantly inhibited in EE and OE, showing the EE group the highest magnitude of inhibition. Frequencies of inhibition above 30% (biological tolerance limit declared by Chilean legislation) indicated that AChE is the most frequently inhibited enzyme in the OE whereas BChE is for EE. In pre-spray neurobehavioral evaluations, the OE group showed the highest frequency of low-performance individuals, followed by the EE group. For the majority of tests, the performance worsened during the spraying season. The most affected domains were memory, executive function, and psychomotricity. Poor associations were found between enzyme activities and neurobehavioral outcomes. Systematic biomonitoring and health outcomes studies are necessary to improve environmental and occupational health policies in Chile.

Prenatal exposure to pesticides and risk for holoprosencephaly: a case-control study

BackgroundPesticide exposure during susceptible windows and at certain doses are linked to numerous birth defects. Early experimental evidence suggests an association between active ingredients in pesticides and holoprosencephaly (HPE), the most common malformation of the forebrain in humans (1 in 250 embryos). No human studies to date have examined the association. This study investigated pesticides during multiple windows of exposure and fetal risk for HPE. It is hypothesized that pre-conception and early pregnancy, the time of brain development in utero, are the most critical windows of exposure.MethodsA questionnaire was developed for this retrospective case-control study to estimate household, occupational, and environmental pesticide exposures. Four windows of exposure were considered: preconception, early, mid and late pregnancy. Cases were identified through the National Human Genome Research Institute’s ongoing clinical studies of HPE. Similarly, controls were identified as children with Williams-Beuren syndrome, a genetic syndrome also characterized by congenital malformations, but etiologically unrelated to HPE. We assessed for differences in odds of exposures to pesticides between cases and controls.ResultsFindings from 91 cases and 56 controls showed an increased risk for HPE with reports of maternal exposure during pregnancy to select pesticides including personal insect repellants (adjusted odds ratio (aOR) 2.89, confidence interval (CI): 0.96–9.50) and insecticides and acaricides for pets (aOR 3.84, CI:1.04–16.32). Exposure to household pest control products during the preconception period or during pregnancy was associated with increased risk for HPE (aOR 2.60, OR: 0.84–8.68). No associations were found for occupational exposures to pesticides during pregnancy (aOR: 1.15, CI: 0.11–11.42), although exposure rates were low. Higher likelihood for HPE was also observed with residency next to an agricultural field (aOR 3.24, CI: 0.94–12.31).ConclusionsObservational findings are consistent with experimental evidence and suggest that exposure to personal, household, and agricultural pesticides during pregnancy may increase risk for HPE. Further investigations of gene by environment interactions are warranted.

Neuropathological Mechanisms Associated with Pesticides in Alzheimer's Disease.

Environmental toxicants have been implicated in neurodegenerative diseases, and pesticide exposure is a suspected environmental risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Several epidemiological analyses have affirmed a link between pesticides and incidence of sporadic AD. Meanwhile, in vitro and animal models of AD have shed light on potential neuropathological mechanisms. In this paper, a perspective on neuropathological mechanisms underlying pesticides’ induction of AD is provided. Proposed mechanisms range from generic oxidative stress induction in neurons to more AD-specific processes involving amyloid-beta (Aβ) and hyperphosphorylated tau (p-tau). Mechanisms that are more speculative or indirect in nature, including somatic mutation, epigenetic modulation, impairment of adult neurogenesis, and microbiota dysbiosis, are also discussed. Chronic toxicity mechanisms of environmental pesticide exposure crosstalks in complex ways and could potentially be mutually enhancing, thus making the deciphering of simplistic causal relationships difficult.

Passive monitoring techniques to evaluate environmental pesticide exposure: Results from the Infant's Environmental Health study (ISA)

BackgroundPesticides used in agriculture may expose populations living nearby. Costa Rica is a major banana-exporting country, its production depends on extensive pesticide use. ObjectivesTo evaluate environmental pesticide exposure, we measured levels of current-use pesticides in air and dust from 12 schools in Matina County, Costa Rica, with passive sampling methods. MethodsWe selected ten proximal and two non-proximal schools and placed polyurethane foam passive air samplers outdoors at each school, during four consecutive periods. At three of these schools, we also placed an active air sampler during the first 24 h of each sampling period. We collected passive dust samples by placing a glass Petri Dish at the inside of each school. We subsequently performed a chemical analysis of 18 pesticides, using gas chromatography with mass detector. ResultsWith passive air samplers we detected ten different pesticides: two insecticides, two nematicides, and six fungicides, of which nine reported to be used on banana plantations. More than half of the samples contained at least five pesticides. Chlorpyrifos was detected most-frequently, in 98% of samples, followed by the nematicides etoprophos and the fungicide pyrimethanil that were both detected in 81% of samples. Chlorpyrifos concentrations were five times higher in proximal as compared to non-proximal schools: mean = 18.2 ng/m3 (range = 6.1–36.1) and mean = 3.5 ng/m3 (range= <0.5–11.4) and varied more between schools than in time (intra-class correlation coefficient = 0.80). In general, results from passive and active samplers showed similar exposure patterns; yet median concentrations tended to be higher in passive samplers. In dust samples, mostly fungicides were detected; chlorothalonil was detected most frequently, in 50% of samples. DiscussionPassive air sampling is a promising technique to characterize environmental exposure to current-use pesticides; more studies are needed to characterize the sampling rates, reproducibility and optimum sampling times for passive samplers. School environments near banana plantations are contaminated with multiple pesticides that include insecticides, nematicides, and fungicides, which is of concern.

Assessment of DNA damage in Polish children environmentally exposed to pesticides

Exposure to pesticides leads to complex, long-lasting adverse effects on human health, and poses a substantial risk to those living in areas devoted to agriculture. Children are particularly vulnerable to the pesticide exposure, due to the developmental, dietary and physiological factors. Small body mass and typical exploratory behavior result in increased risk of intoxication. Thus, even exposure to low concentrations of pesticides, if of sufficient duration, may lead to permanent health disorders and limit their harmonious development.In this study 108 children, living in areas of an intense pesticide use and a control group (n = 92) of children from an agrotouristic area were investigated, whether DNA damage increased due to prolonged pesticide exposure. A presence of DNA breaks and oxidative damage to DNA bases, characterized as Fpg-sensitive sites, were detected by comet assay. Micronuclei (MN) formation was evaluated by cytokinesis-block MN assay. The exposure of children to pesticides resulted in increased number of MN in peripheral blood lymphocytes (P = 0.016), increased DNA strand breaks level (P = 0.002) and oxidative damage to DNA (P < 0.001). Negative correlation was demonstrated between the level of DNA strand breaks and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity in exposed group. In conclusion, despite just environmental pesticide exposure in the test group of children, significant biological effects were detected.

PESTICIDE EXPOSURE INDEX: PRACTICES AMONG WOMEN FROM AN AGRICULTURAL COMMUNITY IN SOUTHEAST MEXICO

The adverse effects of pesticides on public health have been well documented in different populations across the world. Families of agricultural workers, particularly their wives, face pesticide exposures through a number of complex patterns even when they do not directly engage in agricultural work. Nonetheless, these patterns of exposure among women in agricultural communities remain understudied. Unfortunately, in Mexico there are no studies examining these patterns yet. In consequence, the main goals of this study were to: 1) evaluate pesticide exposure in a rural community of Southeast Mexico, 2) examine the patterns of environmental and para-occupational pesticide exposure, and 3) document the para-occupational and environmental pesticide exposure among women who are not agricultural workers but have an agricultural family or are wives of agricultural workers. We conducted a cross-sectional study of 78 women who did not themselves participate in any agricultural activity, but lived in an agricultural community. Questionnaires and interviews were used to construct a Pesticide Exposure Index (PEI) estimating the degree of pesticide exposure among women from agricultural families and wives of agricultural workers. Through the PEI we showed that women living in agricultural communities using pesticides are inherently exposed to a certain level of pesticides. With the PEI we showed that women from agricultural families, especially wives of agricultural workers, have a long-term para-occupational pesticide exposure that should not be underestimated because they are not agricultural workers.
